Social media zombie
I noticed today, after a lot of fatigue of watching social media - mainly Instagram, that consuming social media had become a full time job for me. I use the term job but its more like an addiction, as obviously no one is paying me to look at social media.
In fact it became more than a job, since we spend about 8hrs in a job, but in my case I was spending every waking hour on social media, about 15hrs on average. That means only 1 hr a day I wasn't looking at social media. And this has been going on for weeks.
Out of the 24hrs in a day, we spend 16hrs awake, and in my case, I was spending all that time on social media. As a child or as a employee, or as a family member we would be forced by our family or peers to avoid such a behaviour, but as a PhD student living alone, this was basically an unimpeded activity.
In order to break free of this obsession I have downloaded the Freedom App and have scheduled break time from the social media in all my devices. I have an ipad, macbook and iphone and a work windows laptop. I chose Freedom app, because it allows the blacklisting of sites and apps on all devices at once, instead of setting limits individually. And since its paid app, there is greater incentive to keep the limits in place than overriding them on the independent devises when mood strikes. Further since I use brave browser, the typical website blockers dont work well from the apple ecosystem and they dont migrate to the windows system.
Another challenge is that I cannot directly download the Freedom app on the work laptop due to university restrictions. So in the meantime I get approval from the IT admin, I'm using BlockSite chrome extenstion on the Brave browser on the windows laptop.
So far the productivity seems high in the last 6 hours. I hope I can maintain it.
